The 2008 Central Park Summer Stage Season Announced

At this year’s Central Park SummerStage, audiences will feast on 32; free music, dance, word, comedy, film and multimedia programs from various genres and styles. Keeping festive with the soul music renaissance,the festival kicks off on Friday, June 13   with a performance by the legendary Mavis Staples and wraps in style with a headline set by popular NYC soul scene revivalists Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings on Sunday, August 17. New York-based acts will showcase their talents, including the likes of Vampire Weekend and Black Dice.

Up-and-coming artists from around the world will perform, including Vieux Farka Touré of Mali and Seun Kuti of Nigeria. Latin America’s heritage will be on display, with presentation of DanceBrazil and concerts starring Mexico’s Julieta Venegas, Maria Rita Los Lonely Boys Mexican-American icons, Los Lobos, and Kinky.

To celebrate Israel’s 60th anniversary, Israeli-born roots-reggae artist Mosh Ben Ari and the Paris-born, Israeli-based pop-folk singer Yael Naim will headline separate dates on the schedule. Two of Israel’s most acclaimed choreographers will premiere their work in the U.S.: Nimrod Freed’s “PeepDance” and the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company’s piece “Kef Kafim,” choreographed by Rami Be’er.

Six benefit concerts will be held by the City Parks Foundation to support the festival. Highlights include Mark Knopfler on July 23 Crosby, Stills & Nash on July 29 and Sonny Rollins on August 6.
