Riot police were called to quell angry protests that broke out Sunday, March 16, in Santiago, Chile after tickets for a concert by internationally acclaimed Italian screen music composer Ennio Morricone sold out. Although 10,000 tickets went up for sale, some 5,000 fans that had slept outside the Mapocho Station Cultural Center ticket window Saturday night were left without a seat. The shortage of tickets turned disappointed fans into angry protesters who demanded an extra concert be scheduled. Some protesters smashed a window which prompted riot police to intervene. Although a truck equipped with a water cannon was mobilized it was not used as police were able to disband the rioters by a forming a human wall.

Ennio Morricone is famous for composing the music for such films as Once Upon a Time in America (1984), The Untouchables (1987) and Bugsy (1991). He has won several BAFTA awards and has received eight Golden Globes, two of which he won. Although Morricone was nominated for five Oscars he did not take home the award until 2007, when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored him with a lifetime achievement Oscar. He is only the second film-music composer in history to receive this award.
