Line-Up To globalFEST Leaked To Global Rhythm
Published November 20, 2007

Gained from sources familiar with the negotiations, we give you the rundown on one of the premiere one-day world music festivals in the world. Ostensibly functioning as a showcase for bookers in New York City as part of APAP (Association For Arts Presenters), globalFEST has become an important one-stop for industry people and fans who want to see and hear who will be the most important groups in upcoming year. In just four short years, it has created a legacy of cutting edge booking mixed with favorites from the far reaches of the globe. The 2008 showcase will be held Sunday, January 13 at Webster Hall, located at 125 E. 11th St.

Past stars to perform include Dengue Fever, Carolina Chocolate Drops,  Daara J, Balkan Beat Box, Rokia Traore, Lokua Kanza, Susheela Raman, Lenine, Angelique Kidjo, Mercan Dede, Vusi Mahlasehla and many others.

The 2008 Line-up:

Chango Spasiuk (Argentina)

This accordion player is something of a folk music icon down there for playing an updated version of the chamame genre.

Crooked Still (Boston)

Traditional American bluegrass and string band led by the voice of Aoife O’Donovan and the banjo of Greg Liszt, who was part of Bruce Springsteen’s Seeger Sessions.

Dulsori (Korea)

This group comes out of the pungmul tradition in which farmers use drums to celebrate and summon the elemental forces of nature - thunder, lightning, rain, etc. – by imitating the sounds each makes.

Fallou Dieng and the DLC (Senegal)

A hard-hitting mbalax musician cut from the mold of Youssou N’Dour

La Cor de la Plana (France)

A hit at WOMEX 2007, this men’s choral sextet accompanies itself on percussion to celebrate Occitan heritage in its many forms.

Little Cow (Hungary)

This band started out as project to make music for animated shorts and has turned into a pop phenom in its homeland.

Nation Beat (NYC-Brazil)

Nation Beat puts its own hip stamp on Afro-Brazilian rhythms of maracatu, Chico Science & the Mangue Beat for a funky carnival meets country and western feel.

Pistolera (NYC)

This group from Brooklyn comes out of the Lila Downs school of celebrating Mexican and Mexican American music with a fresh perspective.

Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic)

Not a vacation destination in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata is an 84-year-old Dominican guitarist is a living library of the acoustic music traditions of his homeland.

Samarabalouf (France)

Everyone is thrilled by the acoustic guitar shredding of Rodrigo and Gabriela, but this trio puts its own European take on acoustic guitar shredding.

Toumast (Mali)

Another rocking band out of the Tuareg desert blues tradition with a new album coming out on Real World.

Vinicio Capossela (Italy)

Some say Capossela is an Italian version of Tom Waits, and they would be far wrong.
