Rykodisc Remembers Lucky Dube On The First Anniversary Of His Death
Published October 20, 2008

Curated by KCRW radio host Tom Schnabel, the DVD/CD package surveys the entire career South African reggae star.

Rykodisc is pleased to announce the release of Retrospective featuring the music of acclaimed South African reggae legend Lucky Dube.  The album, curated by noted world music figure and KCRW, Los Angeles radio host Tom Schanbel, is due out on October 21, 2008.  The two-disc digipack contains extensive liner notes, a 13-song disc (with songs never before available in the US) and a bonus DVD, featuring a 90-minute concert, “Lucky Dube Live In Concert,” plus five music videos never before released in the U.S.

The globally revered South African musician was one of Africa’s most beloved artists and one of reggae’s most powerful voices.  Lucky Dube’s music has touched millions through his astonishing 22 albums (recorded in English, Zulu and Afrikaans).

“Retrospective” is a tribute to Lucky Dube, whose life was tragically cut short on October 18, 2007 when he was murdered in a Johannesburg carjacking.  While the release marks the anniversary of his death, it more importantly celebrates the life work of a groundbreaking artist who helped effect profound and political change in South Africa.

Curated by Tom Schnabel (KCRW), “Retrospective” features a faithful chronology that represents different phases of Lucky Dube’s career, from his first release in 1982 to his last in 2006.  It captures the genius, hope, and enduring truth of Lucky’s message and the beauty in his music.
