A Brother With Perfect Timing

Pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, born Dollar Brand in South Africa more than 70 years ago, remains one of the most acclaimed jazz musicians that nation has produced. In this superb documentary, Ibrahim recounts, in revealing interviews, the tumultuous history of South Africa and his own place within its culture. As happened to so many of his countrymen, apartheid forced Ibrahim to be exiled from his homeland for many years, and through stories and you-are-there footage shot both in Cape Town (he returned home in 1990) and his longtime adopted home of New York, his personal journey unfolds. Superb concert performance scenes, though not nearly enough of them, supply the musical highlights.
