Founded in 2004 as an all-vinyl collaboration between Honest Jon’s record shop in London and the Berlin-based Basic Channel label, Basic Replay is a reissue imprint that’s still primed to be devoured by fans of classic reggae music. The label tests the waters with its first CD compilation—a 16-track sampler featuring classic dub, dancehall and roots favorites that stretch back to 1974, most of which are available on CD for the first time here. Many of the artists—Chuck Turner, Professor Grizzly, King Culture, Gregory Isaacs, and White Mice, among others—epitomize the best of contemporary reggae, balancing on the cutting edge between dub, techno, and other flavors. With a scope that extends far beyond the old school, the grooves on this set will hold a significant appeal for fans of dub, hip-hop, dance, and even soul, which makes it exciting to contemplate what other unseen vaults the label might be cracking open in the future.
