Big!World!Fun! family series “Nature Tales” opens with a Brazilian carnival at the Ford Amphitheatre on July 5th at 10 a.m. Children get free admission to one-hour programs for families. Arrive early to create your own creature puppet.

The Ford Amphitheatre’s Big!World!Fun! family series “Nature Tales” opens with the vibrant sights and sounds of Viver Brasil Dance Company’s “Splash! A Celebration.” Families are invited to swim in the stream of Afro-Brazilian culture, with dancing mermaids, drumming kings and a parade of queens on July 5 at 10:00 a.m. “Splash! A Celebration” will have the audience on their feet as Viver Brasil re-creates a Brazilian carnival at the Ford including brilliantly colored costumes, rhythmically infectious dance accompanied by live percussion and an opportunity for the audience to learn carnival dance movement and join in.

The award-winning Viver Brasil Dance Company is a Los Angeles-based ensemble founded in 1997 and committed to cultivating Afro-Brazilian dance and music traditions, while extending their boundaries through community outreach, educational programs and concert dance.

“Splash! A Celebration” is the first of 8 Big!World!Fun! family series events in July and August. These family friendly, one-hour events offer popular multidisciplinary, multicultural programming, with an emphasis on animals and the environment. In keeping with the series theme, patrons may arrive early to create their own felt animal puppets to take home starting at 9 a.m., craft materials to make felt elephants, lions, tigers and bears will be provided on the Ford’s entryway plaza. In addition, all attendees receive coupons for discount admission to the L.A. Zoo courtesy of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association the zoo is located in Griffith Park a short drive from the Ford.

Highlights of the 2008 Big!World!Fun! family series include: Grandeza Mexicana Folk Ballet’s “Imaginacion al Descubrimiento” (July 26) featuring, The Deer Dance, a traditional celebration of the powerful deer Angahara Dance Ensemble’s “PANCHANTANTRA: Animal Fables of India” (Aug. 2) and members of Diavolo Dance Theater (Aug. 9) transforming themselves from caterpillars to butterflies in an ultra-athletic performance of music, dance and verse.
