First Sight
Hard Kandy

These two 17-year-olds from New Jersey were born in Latin America, but their debut album is straight-ahead rock with little flavor of their native lands. Florencia Bourdin (born in Uruguay) and Diana Dulanto (born in Peru) moved to the U.S.when they were pre-teens, and explored music and art as way to define themselves amidst the language and customs of a new country. They found each other during their freshman year at Kearny and joined forces to try to make their mark in popular music. The duo write songs of the big dramatic variety—as opposed to the pedal-to-the-metal school of rock—with lead singer and guitarist Bourdin holding forth with a nice smoky alto that sounds beyond her years. While the album is surprisingly mature for two young women who aren’t old enough to buy beer or vote, ultimately it’s a mixed bag, with some of the songs falling short despite Boudin’s tasty vocals—more promise than promise delivered.
