Performances - Daniel Goode will premiere Toy Symphony, a choral and instrumental meditation on war, terror,
capitalism, and the end of the world - will it be by fire or ice? Gamelan Son of Lion will be joined by soprano soloist,
Kamala Sankaram. The gamelan will be augmented by toys, such as water whistles, sandpaper blocks, tiny accordions,
locust pods, plastic hammers, slap sticks, pink whistling lips, and other odd things. David Demnitz will offer excerpts from
Operation Iraqi Freedom, a work he describes as "my attempt to write accessible concert music to literally describe
specific events." Patrick Grant offers movements from his tone-poem for gamelan, The Philosopher's Stone, based on a
scenario by Antonin Artaud whose theatrical essays were key in the creation of the Living Theatre's aesthetic.
Workshops and Open Rehearsals - On the afternoons of Dec. 3 & 4, from 4:00-6:00 PM, free community gamelan
workshops will take place. They are a spiraling introduction to gamelan performance practice and rhythmic structure, and
can involve participants of all ages in five minutes time. In no time, bystanders watch the success enjoyed by the
participants, they too, are preparing to take part. Essentially, gamelan music, as it evolved, is a community music. The
public is invited to attend open rehearsals of the ensemble on Dec. 2 & 3 at 7:30 PM. All workshops and open rehearsals
are free.
