This is Detroit's largest ethnic festival and features music, lectures, film presentations, an artists' market and family activities throughout the festival which is held on Detroit's Riverfront at Hart Plaza. Since its inception in 1983, AWF has served as a gateway bringing art, history and music to local, national and international visitors every summer in Detroit. This year's AWF theme will present the life and culture of African Amerians in Detroit through the aforementioned aspects of the African Diaspora. Throughout the weekend, there will be exhibit-like displays, programs and five stages of entertainment commemorating artists, singers and musicians as well as political leaders and events from Detroit's rich history. Presenting sponsors for the 19th Annual AWF are Daimler Chrysler Corporation, Ford Motor Company and General Motors Corporation. Supporting sponsors for the Festival are WB20, Mobil Oil Corporation, Comerica Charitable Foundation, Coca Cola Bottling Company of Michigan, Northwest Airlines, 105.9 JAMZ, WCHB AM 1200 and KISS 102.7 FM. On Time Transportation Inc. is the official ground transportation provider for AWF 2001.
