For fans of timba music across the globe, 2006 was a dream come true. Not only did Bamboleo and Su Trabuco debut their sensational Knock Out DVD/CD, another of Cuba’s leading timba ensembles, Klimax, released its first concert video. Led by drummer and celebrated composer Geraldo Piloto, Klimax pulls out all the stops with a scorching stage show resembling a theater set, including gyrating dancers, colorful backdrops, props, jugglers, acrobats on stilts and much more. Adding even more verve to the band’s polymetric pluck are guest appearances by some of Cuba’s leading musicians, including Bamboleo’s former lead vocalist, Vannia Borges, Amaury Pérez, Roberton, and as if that wasn’t enough, venerated keyboardists Cesar “Pupy” Pedroso and Cucho Valdés. Klimax’s lead vocalists are an amazing trio, singing in tight harmony one instant, dancing in sync the next, and never missing a beat. Piloto, in addition to being one badass drummer, writes some of the most sophisticated compositions in timba, which is saying a lot. He combines funk, rock, jazz, reggaeton, salsa, meringue and other indigenous genres, sometimes within the same song. Interspersed between numbers are comments from Juan Formel, Pedroso, Valdés and Piloto. Nearly every song is a showstopper; the band never holds back throughout its nearly 90-minute performance. Signature Piloto hits such as “Consejo A Una Amiga” and “La Chica Perfecta” are pumped up to the max. ¡Aye que rico!
