Nanny Assis, a vocalist/drummer-percussionist/guitarist, is a talent of remarkable authenticity. He’s played with a long list of artists, and is a highly regarded, first-call percussionist within the Brazilian music scene. In fact, he was once named “Best Percussionist” at the Bahia Instrumental Festival. On his debut solo recording, Assis demonstrates his multifaceted skills as vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and producer. One listen to tracks such as “A Rã (The Toad)” and you’re hooked. Of particular note here is the jovial, prancing line flute played by Oriente Lopez. Some songs lean more towards Brazilian jazz, such as “O Pato,” with its upbeat samba rhythms refrain from “Take the A Train.” The album’s mostly heartwarming, acoustic textures embrace the listener, taking ears on an evocative journey. Assis is certain to garner the attention of those who enjoy beautiful Brazilian-flavored songs. Congrats are due to a well made inaugural effort; may there be many more.
