Buenos Aires Tango Standards

Buenos Aires native Pablo Aslan has been a New York-Los Angeles tango force since 1980, founder of two noted tango ensembles (New York-Buenos Aires Connection and New York Tango Trio), and a member of the Quintet for New Tango. The bassist also worked with folks as diverse as Gary Burton, Paquito D’Rivera, Joe Lovano, Shakira, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Returning to Argentina after a quarter-century, to a city with long jazz and tango histories, Aslan creates improvisatory alchemy with artists at home in both genres -- pianist Abel Rogantini piano, saxman Jorge Retamoza, trumpeter Gustavo Bergalli and drummer Daniel Ástor “Pipi” Piazzolla (incidentally, the accordionist’s grandson) all contribute on these familiar tunes. A subtle convergence results as the milonga and guajira roots of these familiar classics sound through in a brilliant jazz quintet setting, tango as Miles, Coltrane, Evans and Chambers might have conceived it.
