Vittor Santos

Renewed Impressions
Adventure Music

Vittor Santos is a trombonist of great skill and greater generosity; he’s been so busy helping out his friends on their projects that he hasn’t found time for an album of his own in a decade. Maybe that’s why Renewed Impressions sounds so fresh, despite not really pushing any kind of envelope at all. His attack on tunes such as “An American In The Samba” is a master class in how to work a trombone. He swings on “A Trombone On Tereza Street,” gets dreamy on “Etienne And Margot,” and does both on the charming (and charmingly-titled) “I Just Remembered Everything!” He has assembled quite a backing band here, with special kudos going to the amazing guitarist Fernando Clark and to special guest mandolinist Hamilton de Holanda. But Santos remains the star throughout, which is only fair after he has helped out so many of his peers.
