10 Questions for the Dalai Lama
Silver Wave

Film soundtracks have a tough balance to strike in the modern music market. They need to positively complement the images and film they accompany, yet also stand on their own as a repeatable listening experience. Pianist Kater has created eleven primarily instrumental pieces, with some mild chanting and vocals, that don’t fully evoke the culture or music you’d associate with the Dalai Lama or Tibet, but do have a presence and passion that undoubtedly works beautifully with the movie itself. And while the pieces are expertly played, the piano subtly compelling, few of the tracks beg to be anything more than background music for a masseuse or a dinner party. That said, “Ocean of Long Life” blends Kater’s piano with the chant and flutes of Nawang Khechog to haunting effect, while the synthesized beat behind the “10 Questions for the Dalai Lama Closing Theme” gives it a balance missing elsewhere.
