Magnatune represents an anti-corporate shareware model supporting the fee-based download of independent music. Suzanne Teng is a Berkeley-based flutist/percussionist, dancer, teacher and ethnomusicology Ph.D. candidate leading award-winning world music group Suzanne Teng and Mystic Journey. A longtime yoga practitioner and mountain climber, she pens original compositions arranged for multiple flutes. With New Orleans partner/percussionist Gilbert Levy, Teng creates “healing music,” including works for renowned yogis and performances for Thich Nhat Hanh, Marianne Williamson and Deepak Chopra. She’s performed with or alongside the Boston Philharmonic, Tito Puente, Kenny Loggins, Babatunde Olatunji, Airto and Flora Purim. Miles Beyond is Teng’s followup to her debut Mystic Journey, and is touted by Magnatune as being the “4th best-selling Middle Eastern album of all time.” Actually, the styles covered include Spanish, Indian, African, Indonesian, Chinese and Native American. The foundation is Teng’s 10-plus types of flutes, buoyed by Levy’s palette of percussion. Fritz Heede adds sitar, guitar and the Turkish stringed instrument saz; Barry Newton plays string bass; and master oud (Arabic lute) player Naser Musa sits in on didgeridoo, cello, electric bass and keyboards.
