ZONE: Chelsea Center for the Arts is proud to present ZONEMA 2006 honoring Mexican independent cinema.  Over three days, they will show 30 films, including screening of features, continuous screenings of shorts and displays of video art, with many premieres.  This exciting project celebrates the vitality of contemporary Mexican filmmakers, including such international superstars as Guillermo Del Toro (Cronos, Pan's Labyrinth), Alfonso Cuaron (Y Tu Mama, Children of Men) and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (21 Grams, Babel).  Among the films shown will be Gonzalez Inarritu's Mexico, his contribution to the international anthology film 11'09'01, and select scenes from a making-of documentary on Babel, lent by the director.

The festival opens with a gala reception, Thursday December 7, 6-10 pm (invitation only).  All-day screenings on Friday December 8, 2-10pm and Saturday December 9, 12-10 pm.  Single-day pass $20, at the door.  Space is limited, please call for reservations.

The festival reflects ZONE's interdisciplinary mission with documentaries on artists Gabriel Orozco (by Fernanda Romandia) and Javier Marin (by Luis Rochin Naya).  Other highlights include Jose Santos Alvarez Fernandez's Venus, a study of a syncretic religious ritual; Daniela Schneider's avant-garde Pescador, Carlos and David Romay's Toro Negro and Juan Carlos Rulfo's El Hoyo.  The Festival will also be accompanied by an exhibition of drawings by Pilar Goutas. Programs are curated by Jose Alvarez as a chief curator, and distinguished artists in the field of cinematography: Silvana Agostini, Martin Delgado and Pilar Goutas.  ZONEMA 2006 is made possible by the generous contribution of Row 26, with additional support by Codigo 06140, Corona, De Mi Arte A Tu Arte, Estacion Indianilla, Esto Es Tech Mex, the International Morelia Film Festival, Mantarraya Productions and the Mexican Cultural Institute of New York.
