World Music CD Reviews Celtic & Irish

Mondo Melodia

The Mondo series is an ongoing set of CDs that highlight a particular style or region of world music. Mondo Melodia, creator of the series, lists them as “definitive collections from around the world.” While I admire their confidence and swagger, the idea that a single disc could be definitive of all Celtic music, from Ireland, Scotland, and Galicia, is delusional. (They completely omit any music from Brittany.) In the future, the Mondo series should consider focusing its scope on individual countries. That being said, Mondo Celtic is a very strong collection of many of the best musicians in the genre. From stalwarts Christy Moore, Paul Brady, and Donal Lunny, to newer innovators Kila, Shooglenifty, and Lunasa, the fourteen songs offer no real surprises. They are all high quality tunes, previously released, by high quality musicians. Most people who already love Celtic music should know, or even own, 90 percent of this, but for the casual listener, or those new to Celtic music, this is a fine doorway into a lot of great discoveries. Is it definitive? No. Is it exceptional? Most definitely, yes.
