The next African Acoustic night at Barbes promises true star power! Coumba Sidibe is the original Wassoulou pop music singer. You likely know Malian diva Oumou Sangare. Well, she got her start as a chorus singer in Coumba’s band. It’s a kind of open secret that Coumba has been living in New York the past few years, gigging only occasionally. But her deep, soulful voice and near-mystical stage presence remain intact. It’s taken some doing, but I’ve arranged to bring Coumba to Barbes for a very special night of all-acoustic Wassoulou music on Saturday, April 22, 8:00PM-10:00PM. Abdoulaye Alhassane (of the Niger roots pop band Mamar Kassey) and I will play acoustic guitars. Coumba will bring her djembe player. But that’s it. An intimate 4-piece band with a legend of Malian music up front. The evening will include a special tribute to the recently late Ali Farka Toure, a good friend of Coumba’s and the musical hero for Abdoulaye.
Aside from being living history, Coumba is a tremendously warm and winning performer. This is going to be a sweet night! Mark your calendar now.
