Lollapalooza Festival Returning to Chicago in August
Published March 16, 2005

Lollapalooza will return to Chicago's Grant Park as a three-day festival from August 4-6. Headliners will include the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Wilco and Kanye West, as well as a rare appearance by world music icon Manu Chao.

Lollapalooza will return to Chicago's Grant Park as a three-day festival from August 4-6. Relaunched as a destination event last year, Lollapalooza had moved away from its alternative-rock roots, boasting a lineup that ranges from rock to rap, trance to jam.

Headlined by Red Hot Chili Peppers, who played the festival in its infancy in 1992, and Windy City powerhouses Wilco and Kanye West, this year's festivities will feature over 120 bands on multiple stages throughout Grant Park. Other marquee names include Manu Chao, who will make a rare U.S. appearance, Death Cab for Cutie, Common, WEEN, the Raconteurs, Queens of the Stone Age, The Shins, Iron & Wine and Matisyahu. Last year's festival was headlined by Weezer, Widespread Panic, the Arcade Fire, The Killers and the Pixies, hot on the heels of its reunion tour.

Like Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits, Lollapalooza leans heavily on two of the country's most bankable live music scenes: indie rock and jam. In addition to the abovementioned headliners, Lollapalooza will place young, indie sensations like Broken Social Scene, The New Pornographers, The Go! Team, the Editors and the
Secret Machines next to some of the scene's founding fathers, such as Sonic Youth and the Flaming Lips. Representing the jam camp are Chicago natives Umphrey's McGee, Blues Traveler, the Disco Biscuits, Particle and the Benevento/Russo Duo.

The three-day festival will also dip its toes into alt-country (Ryan Adams), electronica (Thievery Corporation), garage-rock (deadboy & the Elephantmen),
hip-hop (Lyrics Born) and punk (Reverend Horton Heat). Though his two most popular bands, Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros, remain dormant, festival founder Perry Farrell will likely perform in some capacity, perhaps under his DJ alias Peretz.
