ALAN AND JOHN KELLY

Irish brothers Alan and John Kelly are well established as two of the finest young musicians in the western part of their country. The Kellys play a solidly traditional repertoire of jigs and reels with effortless authority on piano-accordion and flute. On Fourmilehouse, their first recorded collaboration, they lock into a tight unison playing style to serve up several dozen fast and fluid jigs and reels. Arrangements are tasteful if minimal. The accompaniment, primarily by guitarist Arty McGlynn, is relegated to the background, a bit of a shame when a musician of McGlynn’s caliber is employed. Nonetheless, the brothers play with such natural passion and skill that their consummate musicianship ends up where it should be: up-front and unadorned.
