On Sunday, February 26 at 3 pm, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs presents a tribute concert to Gabriela Mistral, the famed Chilean poet and first woman writer to win the Nobel Prize.  2005 marked the 50th anniversary of her esteemed award.  The concert takes place in the Preston Bradley Hall of the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 East Washington Street.  Admission is free.

Gabriela Mistral is considered one of the giants of Latin American poetry, and her work is cherished within the Latin community.  This unique and groundbreaking concert features pieces by seven Latin American composers currently living in Chicago, including composers Fareed Haque (Chile/Pakistan/US), Sergio Assad (Brazil), Guillermo Gregorio (Argentina), Ricardo Lorenz (Venezuela), Victor Pichardo (Mexico), Gustavo Leone (Argentina), and Elbio Barilari (Uruguay).  Actresses Rosario Vargas and Marcela Muñoz will read excerpts from Mistral's poetry.  Featured instrumentalists include members of the MAVerick Ensemble, a young and critically acclaimed Chicago chamber music group.
