Rides Again
Zoho Music

The title Rides Again obviously refers to the fact that the album is a sequel and on their second album Trio Mundo has chosen to emphasize the talents of band member Manolo Badrena, a long-time Weather Report and Zawinul collaborator, and his rhythms and musical spirit. The other members are guitarist Dave Stryker and bassist Andy McKee, both of whom are also very experienced jazz musicians with numerous recordings to their credit, and guest saxophonist and flautist Steve Slagle. The band deftly mixes jazz with Latin (“Pinarena” and the Puerto-Rican inspired “Guille”), and African rhythms (“Cameroun,” “Africano”). Manolo is featured on drum set, percussion (and nylon-string guitar on two tracks) but it’s his mostly wordless vocals on some of the compositions that give the group an especially original and compelling sound. McKee’s “Dream Maurice,” which was inspired by a Ravel melody, is a composition of great lyrical beauty while Stryker’s “Shanti,” the closing track, adapts Indian music to a jazz combo, with Slagle’s flute serving as a surrogate sitar.
