World Music CD Reviews Middle East & North Africa

By Jill Ettinger

Zakir Hussain helped open Westerners' eyes to the tabla with furiously fast fingers and rhythmic transformations. He's simply the best at what he does, already certified as legacy. That said, here he compiles his favorite live performances on Selects, 62 minutes of overly abundant, flowing finger-beat poetry. None are titled; location and date suffice for these time capsules of mysterious mastery. Travel to Ahmedabad in January 1999 (tracks 2, 5) for prime examples, but anywhere you stop, you just won't want to leave.
