Published November 28, 2005

Steve Bernstein is named Publisher. Founder Alecia J. Cohen will become Associate Publisher.

Relix Magazine, the live music authority, has acquired the monthly world music magazine Global Rhythm, it was announced by Relix president and publisher Steve Bernstein. This is the first magazine acquisition for Relix, which also owns the websites and and co-owns the Jammys, an annual music awards show. Following the acquisition, founding publisher Alecia Cohen will continue to manage and direct Global Rhythm.

“I am excited about the opportunity to expand our publishing company to include a world music title. I see tremendous growth potential given today's global culture,” said Bernstein on the acquisition. “I was immediately impressed with the quality of Global Rhythm and look forward to connecting thousands more fans with the richness and variety of international sounds.”

Global Rhythm shares a similar grassroots history with Relix. Founded 13 years ago by current associate publisher Alecia Cohen, the magazine began as a newsletter aimed at spotting emerging artists and ethnic music trends. Today, Global Rhythm is published 12 times annually with a circulation of 50,000 and 150,000 readers. In addition to featuring a wide range of artists such as Senegalese superstar Youssou N'Dour, Hasidic reggae rapper Matisyahu and Brazilian legend Milton Nascimento, the magazine also features the latest in film, food and travel coverage.

“I'm thrilled about the new acquisition,” says Cohen, “as it will enable me to carry out my vision of expanding Global Rhythm to a wider audience by engaging new music enthusiasts in the best world music has to offer.”

Each issue of Global Rhythm includes a free collector's compilation CD featuring world music legends and today's new stars.
