ISRAELI FOLK SINGER CHAVA ALBERSTEIN
PERFORMS IN ZANKEL HALL ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19 AT 8:30 P.M.

Carnegie Hall presents Israeli singer-songwriter Chava Alberstein in Zankel Hall on Saturday, November 19 at 8:30 p.m. This is Ms. Alberstein’s first appearance on a Carnegie Hall stage, and she performs with Avi Agababa on percussion and Oved Efrat on guitar. The concert features a selection of new and favorite works, which are mostly sung in Hebrew although she will perform a number of works in Yiddish as well.

Born in Poland and a resident of Israel since the age of four, Ms. Alberstein is considered by many to be one of Israel’s most accomplished singers, having released over 50 albums since the late 1960s. Ms. Alberstein is well known for her strong social, cultural, and political statements, communicated through her songs. She has recorded more than 40 albums in Hebrew, six of which have been awarded the Kinor David prize, Israel’s equivalent to a Grammy Award. Ms. Alberstein has also released six albums in Yiddish, including The Well—a collaboration with The Klezmatics released in 1998, and an English language album of standards ranging from works by Gershwin to Lennon and McCartney. In May 2005, Ms. Alberstein received an honorary Doctorate from the University of Tel Aviv, with the University Board of Directors describing her as “standing for 40 years in a central place on the Israeli stage, as a symbol and example for Israeli music.”
