Pearl of Africa Music (PAM) Awards to Honor Uganda's Best
Published September 27, 2005

Uganda celebrates its own musical stars for the third consecutive year on October 1. Awards will be handed out in several categories, from hip-hop to reggae to best live band.

The Uganda music recording industry's first and only award, the PEARL, is annually awarded by the Pearl of Africa Music Awards voting membership to honour music excellence.

Two different bodies - Panel of judges and the General public cast their votes for a single winner in each category.

The panel of judges is made up of nine people from different institutions critical to the development of music in Uganda. They include one person from the MDD department of Makerere University, general public, Kampala Music school, retired veteran artiste, VJ/TV presenter of a music show (Media-TV) DJ/Radio presenter (Media-Radio), club DJ (DJs association), entertainment writer (Media-Print) and a music director /programmer from a radio station.

The panel is also responsible for resolving any queries or abnormalities that may arise from the nomination process. A representative from Ernst & Young supervises the panel.

The panel’s vote constitutes 60% while that of the public (through SMS) forms 40% of the total vote per category. The summation of votes cast by the above two bodies determines the winner. It is therefore awarded for artistic or technical achievement, not sales or chart positions.
