Over the past five or so years, British DJ Gilles Peterson has been quietly building up a body of work: inviting old friends and peers from his world-wide travels to jam, experiment, collaborate, lay down something new; forecasting and championing new acts long before the commercial and artistic vindication in which he had played a part became widely accepted; a musical record that in its depth and contemporary relevance is as important as any, comparable to those very rare albums that come along and change our perceptions and define an era.

We are talking about the live sessions recorded in the legendary BBC Maida Vale studios for the DJ’s visionary ‘Worldwide’ radio show on BBC Radio 1 and also syndicated across the globe, though never before aired outside of the UK. With the majority aired once, at most twice these radio live sessions are often confined to the BBC vaults and left to gather dust. Indeed a select handful of tracks on the album including music from Bjork, Roisin Murphy and Common have never seen any form of airing. But some recordings are just too important, too damn good, to be left to posterity.

And so here on CD for the first time are the very best tracks by the very best artists recorded ‘live in session’ on BBC Radio 1 ‘Worldwide’. The CD, Gilles Peterson Presents the BBC Sessions, will be released on Ether Records on October 31. It will contain exclusive tracks from N*E*R*D, Zero 7, Beck, The Roots, Amp Fiddler, Nitin Sawnhey, Jamie Cullum, Bjork, Heavy, Jazzmine Sullivan, Matthew Herbert Big Band, Roots Manuva, Beth Gibbons, Plantlife, Peven Everett, Spektrum, Jade Fox, The Heritage Orchestra, Dwele, New Sector Movements, Cody Chestnut and Fat Freddy’s Drop.
