Rejecting the description of African bluesman often imposed upon him, Grammy winner Ali Farka Touré’s position in his homeland is a lot more complicated than that—he heads a philanthropic organization and even serves as the mayor of Mali’s Niafunké area, presiding over more than 50 villages. His music is loved by millions, and Nonesuch Records recently reissued two classics, Red and Green, as one double album. Now he is enjoying critical acclaim for his collaboration with kora master Toumani Diabaté, In The Heart Of The Moon, itself destined to be considered a classic.
