Bill Murphy has worked on both sides of the music business—as manager for an internationally distributed record label, and as freelance contributor to a wide range of music magazines. Currently based in New York City, he ran Bill Laswell’s Axiom imprint (distributed through Island/PolyGram and eventually Chris Blackwell’s Palm Pictures) for nearly ten years, overseeing an eclectic catalog of more than 30 releases. Since 2003, he has written for The Wire, Remix, Mix, Guitar World, Future Music, Elemental, Bass Player and Global Rhythm, and has also created online content for music software developers such as Digidesign (makers of Pro Tools) and Ableton (makers of Ableton Live). Before joining Global Rhythm, he was also freelance associate editor at Guitar World’s Bass Guitar for the duration of the title’s four-year run. Murphy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan University with a concentration in Music History.
