Popular Zimbabwean musician Simon Chimbetu died on August 14. He was 50. The cause is unknown but he had recently taken ill. Chimbetu's most recent album was 2004's 10 Million Pound Reward. Called the king of sungura music had become increasingly political and anti-violence in his music in recent years; in fact he first found success as a member of the band called the Marxist Brothers. That band split in the mid-1990s and some of the musicians joined The Marxist Brothers eventually dissolved in the mid-90s as the members left to pursue their own careers, while others joined Chimbetu's backing band, Dendera Kings. Chimbetu was known for such albums as Survival and Lullaby.
