Tom Terrell Remembrance To Be Held In New York
Published January 7, 2008

The Global Rhythm family has lost one its members. Writer and photographer Tom Terrell passed away November 29 after a year-long battle with prostate cancer. According to his sister, Bevie, he was working, joking and having fun up until he went into a coma on the morning of November 27.

Those who attended Global Rhythm’s anniversary party will remember Alecia Cohen giving a shout out to Tom from the stage, and hopefully those in attendance who knew him were able to say hello before he cut out. Those reading the magazine will no doubt remember Tom’s take on Fela for our August/September Legends column, as well as several stories he did for the magazine over the years—type in a search for Tom Terrell on our site for a complete listing.

Ex-club and alternative rock radio DJ, ex-promo person for Mango/Antilles Records and former in-house PR guy for Verve Music Group, Tom Terrell has been a music journalist/photographer since 1996. Along with being a regular contributor to Global Rhythm, his work appeared in the pages of Vibe, Essence, Trace, Jazziz, and Seconds, as well as in the books The Vibe History of Hip Hop, Men Of Color and Transculturalism. He reviewed jazz music for NPR's All Things Considered, was the music director for XM Radio’s World Zone, and wrote the liner notes for a six-CD Miles Davis box set for On The Corner, which was recently released.

Tom had been receiving treatment at the Lombardi Cancer Center in Georgetown. He chose to stop doing chemotherapy around Thanksgiving and moved from the hospital to a hospice where spent his final days surrounded by family and friends. The family is working on funeral arrangements, but tentative plans for the service are for next Saturday, December 8th, in Washington, DC (all are welcome). They plan to organize a separate memorial service in New York City.
