The Mexican Community Commemorates September 11th

Headlined, the Mexican Corridos (Ballads) of September 11th, artists of all crafts will commemorate our nation’s losses on that tragic day.

A lecture on these corridos inspired by that tragic day will be held by Professor John H McDowell from Indiana University. Having had taught courses at IU on both Chicano folklore and the folklore of Mexico, McDowell is credited with making the documentary, Poetry and Violence: The Ballad Tradition of Mexico’s Costa Chica. There will be a reception with music by Grupo Santa Ana, a group of Mexican norteño musicians. On top of that, photographs of Mexican subway musicians by Antonio Martínez Alva will be on display, along with the 9/11 National Tribute Quilt. This event will be presented by Mano a Mano: Mexican Culture Without Borders at the American Folk Art Museum.
