Sweet Honey In The Rock Signs With Appleseed Recordings
Published August 1, 2007

In the midst of celebrating ten years of commitment to releasing quality, Grammy-nominated releases and paying due reverence to music's most treasured artists, Pennsylvania-based Appleseed Recordings have announced the signing of long-cherished, world-renowned a cappella vocal ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock.

“We are honored to sign Sweet Honey in the Rock to Appleseed,” enthuses Appleseed Recordings’ CEO/founder, Jim Musselman. “I have long admired the group and have been a fan for years. The group has a similar philosophy to Appleseed using music as a tool of social change and social justice.”

Forging ahead with a track record of almost thirty-five years of music-making, global touring and Grammy Award-winning/nominated releases behind them, the exhilarating folk/gospel sextet (recently made a quintet), known as much for their subtle political activism as their musical accomplishments, moves boldly into today's ever-evolving music scene and their new Appleseed Recordings affiliation with “Experiences 101,” a learning-through-music themed project (aimed at everyone from children to their parents) that matches their joyfully interwoven vocalizing and motivational advice set to a musical soundscape which encompasses touches of folk, blues, gospel, jazz and even rap.

Founded in 1973 by Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon at the (Washington) D.C. Black Repertory Theater Company, Sweet Honey in the Rock has become a significant presence in Black culture, folk/gospel music and political activism around the world. In the course of 20 previous CDs, the group has toured much of the globe, performed at major political rallies and events, and been featured on Grammy Award-nominated/winning recordings, in documentaries and books.

The current line-up comprises vocalists/percussionists Aisha Kahil, Carol Maillard, Louise Robinson, Ysaye Maria Barnwell and Nitanju Bolade Case (along with sign-language interpreter Shirley Childress Saxton; Dr. Reagon retired from the line-up in 2004).
