New York's Central Park Summerstage Series Announces 2006 Dates
Published May 16, 2006

One of the world’s most beloved performing arts festivals, Central Park SummerStage presented by Snapple proudly enters its third decade of presenting free, innovative, eclectic, and thought provoking programming for all New Yorkers. In keeping with SummerStage tradition, the 2006 season will include a wide range of performances, by both renowned and emerging artists. Whether you’re a lover of jazz, rock, pop, R&B, world music, word, film, modern dance or flamenco, Central Park SummerStage has something for everyone, all summer long, for free. Snapple is the presenting sponsor of Central Park SummerStage.

Of special note this year is the abundance of renowned female artists that SummerStage will welcome from around the world. Among the many women to grace the stage this season are: fierce Canadian songstress Feist on June 25th at 3:00 PM; Tony Award winner Audra McDonald on June 29th at 7:00 PM; the New York premier of Edie Brickell and New Bohemians on July 28th at 7:00 PM; the UK’s “Vertically Challenged” hip-hopper Lady Sovereign on July 30th at 3:00 PM, and 2006 Pulitzer Prize finalist Joan Didion will read from her best-selling book “The Year of Magical Thinking,” on June 30th at 7:30 PM.

As in years past, Central Park SummerStage will again host a small series of ticketed benefit performances designed to support the numerous free events presented throughout the summer. These shows also abound with the double X chromosome and include Grammy Award winning blues rocker Bonnie Raitt on June 28th at 7:00 PM; indie music star Ani DiFranco on July 13th at 7:00 PM; and the poetic soul Fiona Apple on July 26th at 6:30 PM.

The Central Park SummerStage 2006 season consists of 30 free performances in music, dance, word and film as well as six benefit concerts to support its free programming. The festival - which begins in the middle of June and closes August 13 - will open on June 16 with Nu Jazz Today: Charlie Hunter & Bobby Previte with special guest Elliot Sharp as Groundtruther, Matthew Shipp, Nils Petter Molvaer, and Sex Mob providing an evening of free and experimental jazz, presented in collaboration with Thirsty Ear Records.

  • SummerStage will continue its tradition of celebrating our neighbors to the north on Sunday, June 25th at 3:00 PM, with Canada Day! showcasing Feist, Buck 65, and Jason Collette. Toronto-based singer Feist’s 2004 Let It Die release has been praised by critics far and wide with The New York Times stating, “Her voice can take on a vulnerable flutter and tinges of Billie Holiday’s melancholy, or open up and grow torchy.” Combining hip-hop and turntablism with country, blues and folk, Buck 65 has earned himself comparisons to Beck and put his home town on the hip-hop map. Rounding out the bill is Jason Collett, another Broken Social Scene-ster. Idols Of Exile, his latest country-tinged solo album, was described as “One of the greatest singer-songwriter albums to come out of Canada in the last ten years” by Under The Radar Magazine.
  • On Friday, July 28th at 7:00 PM SummerStage is proud to host the New York premier of Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, publicly reun
