New CSS Track Released Online
Published February 23, 2007

CSS continues to generate substantial buzz on the internet with the release of their new track, a cover of L7’s “Pretend We're Dead.” Have a listen here:

The sextet started out in 2003 as a bit of a joke, made apparent by the fact that none of the band members could really play their instruments. The band’s name (“Cansei de Ser Sexy”) is Portuguese for “tired of being sexy,” which lead singer Lovefoxxx traces back to a ridiculous Beyonce quote. Unlike other Brazilian musicians or groups who associate their music heavily with the Brazilian tradition, "…this group sings in English as opposed to their native language of Portuguese,” states their Myspace page, “and claim that their scene is not Sao Paulo, but the internet.”

“Pretend We’re Dead” was recorded for BBC Radio; the L7 cover reinforces their quirky persona (they played “La Bamba” by Ritchie Valens on the same program) and nomenclature (their 2005 release is titled CSS SUXXX, and includes the tracks “Meeting Paris Hilton” and “Art Bitch”). CSS, the first Brazilian band on the Subpop label, recently released Cansei de Ser Sexy in late 2006.
