February 26 marked the release of San Francisco Bay icon Tommy Guerrero's new album, Return of the Bastard. Produced by Galaxia Records, the release celebrates the 10-year anniversary of Guerrero’s debut album Loose Grooves and Bastard Blues, which also came out on Galaxia. Return of the Bastard is Guerrero's fifth full-length album, with LPs released on Mo' Wax and Quannum.Guerrero.
Guerrero, who NPR aptly called a “one man groove factory,” plays nearly all the instruments you hear on his recordings, including bass, guitar, kalimba, and percussion. There are additional bits from Chuck Treece on drums, Brazilian artist Curumin on vocals and Fredo Ortiz on congas (who recently played percussion/drums with the Beastie Boys on tour). Tommy Guerrero’s songs are marked by melodic and soulful, atmospheric instrumentation. They are the amalgamation of tunes that stream through his head, usually captured on the first take, and are timeless soundscapes to your laid-back afternoons, mornings or nights.
