Gilberto Gil Speaks In New York
Published February 2, 2006

On January 19, Brazilian music legend and Cultural Minister Gilberto Gil came to New York and gave a speech on his views about government’s role in shaping and shepherding the culture, and the Lula government of Brazil’s efforts in that regard. He was the guest of honor at a reception, where he spoke briefly regarding the new Brazil in America initiative, a cooperative effort to bring Brazilian performing artists to the United States with underwriting from major Brazilian corporations who receive substantial tax breaks for their support of the arts. The Brazil in America program seeks to promote Brazilian artists and culture in the United States through a network of performing arts centers.  Interested program participants in the United States will work closely with the Broward Center for Performing Arts, in Fort Lauderdale, FL, to bring an increased number of performances by Brazilian artists to the U.S. Brazil’s Ministry of Culture will select projects that match the arts presenters’ interests. The Ministry will then invite Brazilian corporations to take part in program sponsorship, offering investors favorable tax incentives.
The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is the first performing arts center to be selected as a Brazilian “Point of Culture” in the United States. Other speakers at the event included Mark Nerenhausen, CEO & President of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts; Celio Turino, Secretary of Programs and Projects, MINC; Sergio Xavier, Secretary of Development & Incentives, MINC; Antonio Grassi, President of FUNARTE. An excerpt from Gilberto Gil’s speech is below.
