First Mariachi Festival Of New York Features Rare East Coast Appearance By Mariachi Legends
Published September 21, 2007

New York’s first Mariachi Festival will feature the nation’s top mariachi group Sol de Mexico, directed by the “King of Mariachi” José Hernandez. Presented by The Mexican Cultural Institute and the Mariachi Academy of New York, the show is the New York debut of Sol de Mexico’s original show Mariachi! The Passion of Mexico, a once-in-a-lifetime musical journey through the history of the Mexican mariachi tradition. From its roots in rural Jalisco to its transformation as the music of the Mexican Revolution and finally as the national music of Mexico, mariachi is a source of pride for Mexicans on both sides of the US-Mexico border.

This original presentation will be enhanced by local mariachi stars from three groups: Mariachi Real de Mexico, Mariachi Oro de Mexico, and Mariachi Instrumental de Mexico. Raices de Mexico ballet folklorico dance group and students of the Mariachi Academy of New York, the first mariachi afterschool program on the east coast, will also perform. All proceeds from the concert will support the Mariachi Academy of New York.
