Singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Curumin (aka Luciano Nakata Albuquerque) is Spanish/Japanese/Brazilian and is from and based in São Paulo. His new release, Achados e Perdidos (Quannum Projects), pairs frenetic, afro-beat to samba rhythms that nod to everyone from Milton Nascimento to Fela Kuti, with a modern-day, beat-conducting approach, Curumin’s musicianship is nothing if not diverse and brilliant. His beats are as original and infectious as the "Madlib of Brazil" tag implies, but filled with a breezy, free-wheeling flair. The album recalls '70s samba funk at its best, channeling musical greats like Jorge Ben, Milton Nascimento and Tim Maia, but peppered with contemporary flourishes from jazz and funk to hip hop.
When performing live Curumin sings and plays both the ukulele and drums. His voice recalls the best of American pop singers and he beautifully sidesteps the language barrier and delivers a knock-out live show that leaves you wanting more.
