Black 47 Celebrate “Sweet 16” Season of Residency at New York Club
Published September 27, 2005
Style: Rock

New York City, NY – A performance that has been tagged “a rite of passage for all New Yorkers” by the New York Daily News, seminal Irish rockers Black 47 will reprise a 16-year tradition with a fall / winter Saturday night residency in New York City beginning October 15 at Connolly’s Pub and Restaurant in Times Square.  Black 47 continues to tour throughout the U.S. in support of their latest disc Elvis Murphy’s Green Suede Shoes (2005 Gadfly Records) and its accompanying memoir, “Green Suede Shoes,” (2005 Thunder’s Mouth Press) by singer/songwriter/author Larry Kirwan.

Though years end, Black 47 will reprise a 16-year tradition that propelled the band from local pub phenomenon to nationally celebrated artists. The inaugural season of residencies began at Paddy Reilly’s Bar in 1989, where the band held court on Saturdays for 8 consecutive years before moving venues to Connolly’s Pub & Restaurant in 1998.

Taking their name from the blackest year of the Irish Potato Famine, Black 47 burst out of the Irish pub scene on the success of 1992’s Fire of Freedom (EMI). With their signature eclectic sound, socio-political lyrics and off-the-wall live shows Black 47 paved the way for other Irish influenced bands such as The Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly. In 2004 USA Today remarked, “Too long relegated to the fringes, this Irish-American band belongs to the diminishing ranks of rock acts that balance serious sonic thump with intelligent social commentary.”
In 2005, Black 47 concurrently released “Green Suede Shoes,” a memoir written by frontman Larry Kirwan and accompanying disc Elvis Murphy’s Green Suede Shoes. The disc highlights events found in Kirwan’s novel that shaped his political and social views, (“Uncle Jim,” “Far Side of the Wall”), sparked his passion in music (“Elvis Murphy”), and gave way to the formation of Black 47 (“The Bells of Hell”). While Downtown Baghdad Blues, told from the perspective of a young national guardsman, has been hailed as one of the most significant songs to emerge from the war in Iraq.

Black 47 is lead by Larry Kirwan (guitar/vocals), whose plays have been performed both in the US and Europe, while his first novel “Liverpool Fantasy,” an alternate history of the Beatles, was published in 2003. Kirwan is also the host of “Celtic Crush” on Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 24, Sirius Disorder, on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST and Tuesdays, from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. EST. Kirwan’s exclusive Richard Thompson interview, with live tracks and an intimate portrayal of the artist, will be aired on Saturday, September 3.

Connolly’s is located at 121 West 45th Street (between 6th & Broadway). Set time is scheduled for 10 p.m. and tickets are $10. For further information call (212) 597-5126 or visit http://www.connollyspubandrestaurant.com/ <http://www.connollyspubandrestaurant.com/>
