2006 Afropop Hall Of Fame Benefit Dinner & Concert To Honor Vusi Mahlasela, Habib Koite and Dobet Gnahore
Published November 8, 2008

In concert will be three extraordinary, internationally acclaimed artists--Habib Koite from Mali, Vusi Mahlasela from South Africa, and Dobet Gnahore from the Ivory Coast. This will be the New York debut of their enthusiastically received "Acoustic Africa" tour sponsored by Putumayo Records. Join us for a very special evening of music and camaraderie as we induct Habib, Vusi, and Dobet into the Afropop Hall of Fame, honoring their lifetime achievements in the arts as well as their vital roles as ambassadors, connecting Americans to the cultures and stories of contemporary Africa.

Habib Koite is an internationally acclaimed artist from Mali. In Habib's exquisite guitar playing and singing and in his band's sophisticated rhythms and instrumentation, one experiences Habib's unique pan-Malian vision. One of the most charismatic performers in the world.

Vusi Mahlasela is the legendary singer-songwriter from South Africa whose songs in the bad old days of apartheid helped rally the people's spirits. Now Vusi tours the world, charming audiences with his delightful story-telling and powerful singing.

Dobet Gnaore is a striking, multi-talented young artist from the Ivory Coast. She is equally comfortable singing, dancing and playing percussion. Dobet is the winner of Afropop's "Emerging Artist of the Year Award."

This event benefits the public radio series Afropop Worldwide hosted by Georges Collinet. Distributed by PRI Public Radio International which since 1988, the show has introduced Americans to the music and stories of Africa, the African Diaspora, and the Middle East. Proceeds from the benefit will also support Afropop Worldwide's other services--an acclaimed web site (Afropop.org) with fresh content published weekly, a weekly pod cast & e-newsletter, on-demand streaming, fair trade digital downloads, and the digitization of our unparalleled archive of 20 years of sound recordings, interviews, photographs, video, and information.

Recent initiatives include the creation of Afropop Worldwide's National Endowment for the Humanities funded Hip Deep series on music, culture and ideas as well as capacity building workshops in Africa for artists and music business professionals. Afropop Worldwide is produced by the non-profit Brooklyn-based organization World Music Productions, which was founded in 1986 by Executive Producer Sean Barlow.

The Afropop Hall Of Fame award honors extraordinary African artists for their lifetime achievements. Past honorees include Youssou N'Dour, Baaba Maal, Thomas Mapfumo, the Mahotella Queens and Dorothy Masuka. We also honor institutions and individuals whose generosity and vision have made Afropop Worldwide's work possible including: The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the National Endowment for the Humanities, The Nathan Cummings Foundation, Bonnie Raitt, and Josh Mailman.

This New York concert is part of the 40 city "Acoustic Africa" tour this October and November produced by Putumayo World Music. Tour information available at
www.afropop.org. The Acoustic Africa CD is also available on Putumayo.
