With no copyright laws to protect an artist’s creation, Jamaican musicians constantly found their work appearing under many names and titles in the 1950s-’70s. While things slowly changed as the musical forms—ska, reggae, rocksteady, dub, to name a few—made their way off the island, many tracks still belong to labels with extensive back catalogs. Hence you have collections like Dub Marley, ten dub and ten instrumental (or, better put, the same ten tracks sans vocals) Bob Marley classics. While the name Bob doesn’t appear anywhere - hence the copyrighting of 2002 - we all know the songs: “Get Up, Stand Up,” “Concrete Jungle,” and “So Jah Say” but a selection. Laws or no, these cuts are rugged and unpolished as the original two-track mixers they were first captured with. The back cover image proclaiming “Power” sums it up perfectly, if we consider the eventual history these outtakes professed. For that alone, this is an outstanding compilation worthy of any roots fan.
