Reggae Gold 2005
VP
By Judson Kilpatrick

Published September 23, 2005

Reggae’s most highly anticipated yearly compilation kicks off with the militaristic “Step Pon Dem” by Assassin (one of the most compelling DJs since Ninja Man), plus Beenie Man’s latest hit “King Of The Dancehall.” Later, Assassin and Buju Banton take turns over Steely and Clevie’s pulsating, retro-electro Sleepy Dog rhythm. The most popular hit here is the Black Chiney remix of Nina Sky’s “Turnin’ Me On” with (Baby) Cham. There are a few slower cuts for the romantics, including Beres Hammond’s “Love Mood,” Jah Cure’s “Longing For” and Bitty McLean’s haunting version of David Ruffin’s “Walk Away From Love” over an ancient Alton Ellis/Supersonics rhythm. Reggae’s hottest newcomer, I Wayne, appears not with “Can’t Satisfy Her” but with the equally serious title track to his debut album Lava Ground. There are also a couple of hip-hop remixes: Sasha’s “Coca Cola Shape” with Fat Man Scoop, plus Elephant Man’s “Rah Rah” with Daddy Yankee and Pitbull. And, as usual, there’s a bonus mixed CD, this time by Kingston DJ Collin “The Captain” Hines.
