Ras Shiloh
From Rasta To You
VP

By Judson Kilpatrick

Published March 24, 2006

A gifted singer with a conscious outlook, Ras Shiloh has been knocking around the reggae scene for years, most notably appearing on Garnett Silk’s driving hit “Complain” and Buju Banton’s spiritual classic “Give I Strength,” both of which are on this set (and are, actually, the strongest cuts here). Other highlights include “Are You Satisfied?” over the same infectious riddim as Tony Rebel’s “If Jah (Is By My Side)” and Everton Blender’s “Ghetto People Song,” plus several notable new songs like “It’s The Truth,” “Remember The Times” and the title track. Overall, the new material is not exactly essential, but thanks to the backing of star players like Steely and Clevie, Sly Dunbar, Dean Frasier, Mafia and Fluxy and Dalton Browne, the music is solid and rootsy throughout. And for the lovers, Shiloh covers Leo Sayers’ cheesy pop hit “More Than I Can Say.” Those looking for the next Garnett Silk will probably be disappointed, but this is certainly the best Ras Shiloh album so far. Just look for a chance to listen before you buy.
