It’s been said that good things come to those who wait. Excellent news for people with ears, as the elusive dub outfit 10ft Ganja Plant reemerges with many surprises on their latest, Bass Chalice. Influenced equally by studio roots reggae of the 1970s and modern dub styles, legends the Meditations (“To Each”) join the John Brown’s Body side project for this epic third release. Bass Chalice is an example of dub at its finest. “Engine Trouble” and “Burning” are so rub-a-dub-dub good it makes one wonder how and why this group only came into existence recently. JBB front man Kevin Kinsella drops his sweet vocals on the soulful and tender “Last Dance.” “Your Voice” is so silky smooth and creamy, it’s worthy of at least a remix or two—name producers should take note. What’s been added here is a noticeable maturity, less present on previous recordings. Bass Chalice creeps up nice and slow but determined, perhaps something like the curving stalk of a 10-foot ganja plant…it’s easy to see where the name comes from. This music will put the listener in a zone, deliberately, no intoxicants of any kind required, though they certainly may enhance the experience.
