John Hiatt is not just a singer-songwriter, he’s a singer’s songwriter. Over 50 others have recorded his songs over the last three decades and It’ll Come To You… collects 10 of the best. Vanguard let Hiatt himself choose the songs, giving the collection an eclectic mix. The hits are here: Buddy Guy’s scorching “Feels Like Rain,” the momentous B.B. King/Eric Clapton duet “Riding With The King,” and Bonnie Raitt’s career-altering cover of “Thing Called Love.” You also get fine versions by Linda Ronstadt, Willie Nelson, Freddy Fender, Emmylou Harris, among others. Spicing up previously released cuts are three new covers standing on their own. Buddy and Julie Miller rough up “Paper Thin,” Patty Griffin strips “Take It Down” to its barest bones, and Robert Bradley’s Blackwater Surprise adds a funky southern feel to the title track. Like most tributes, you will want to go check out Hiatt’s originals, but that’s a good thing.
