Bluegrass band Cadillac Sky has two notable members, young banjo wizard Matt Menefee and singer/mandolin player Bryan Simpson. Simpson has already proven himself by having some of his songs recorded by current country stars, though when one considers the current state of country music, that may not be the achievement it initially seems. In any case, he co-wrote all but one of the songs on Cadillac Sky’s debut, and they’re intelligently crafted, with a few tracks sporting arrangements that step out of the confines of the bluegrass idiom. “Homesick Angel,” for example, has a strong Celtic flavor, while the title track, one of the album’s best, leads off with a didgeridoo. The lone instrumental features dazzling musicianship. Cadillac Sky can be a little too bombastic or earnest at times, but any bluegrass CD that boldly displays a Marcel Proust quote in the booklet has quite a bit going for it.
