Django Reinhardt
Quintet Of The Hot Club Of France: First Recordings
Prestige

By Jeff Tamarkin

A century after his death, is indelibly associated with his name. Call it Gypsy Swing if you like -- others have -- but the bottom line is that the French guitarist Reinhardt, beginning in the 1920s, took a distinctly American idiom, jazz, and remade it in his own image. These dozen sides, cut in Paris in 1934, aren?Jt really his first, but they're close enough, and they are defining moments in the transition of jazz into an international art form. With Stephane Grappelli, his career-long violinist, at his side, Reinhardt whips on now-standards such as "Tiger Rag," "Sheik Of Araby" and "Dinah."
