Candido & Graciela
Inolvidable
Chesky

By Eliseo Cardona

There was a time, back in the '50s and '60s, when Latin Jazz meant Afro-Cuban music made in New York. And if the music had a female voice, it was Graciela Grillo Perez at the leading edge. Now 88 years old, the woman known simply as Graciela has teamed up with legendary conguero Candido for this exquisite jam session-cum-family reunion. Graciela, who helped make her brother Machito's orchestra famous, is still an expressive singer. On the disc, she revisits mostly classics from the Cuban repertoire: "Si tu supieras," "Cachita," "Tu mi delirio," etc. For his part, Candido is a lively amiable Buddha who can still make the skins sing.
